Multiple Source Paper

I plan to argue that the technology is not what caused the disbelief of documentary photography rather an increased skepticism resulting from a skewed understanding of the root of a photographs "reality"
I wish to argue that while technological advancements have been credited with stripping photos of their realism the true culprits behind photography forgery are elements which far out-date these said advancements , and the artistic horizons offered by these advancements far out-weigh any possible draw back

research paper

while reading one of the books i plan to use for my research paper i came across this photo:

this photo from what is thought to be the golden age of documentary photography was everything but documentary and ended up ruining an innocents man life
photography is held to a double standard excepted to be both artistic and documentation of reality I hope to use photos like this and others to prove that photography should stop being constantly labeled as "faked" or "not-truthful" (except in unique situations) because the truth it is presumed that it holds never truly existed.
I shall talk about framing a photograph- staging it and Photoshop i wish to undermine Photoshop as an influence because people have the wrong impression of it and seem to think it is a magic wand that can do anything, when that isn't really true...but i do not want to dismiss the importance of the camera neither in documentation or in artistic expression. only to put it in context and to argue that it should neither be accepted as an undeniable proof nor as a completely fabricated fairy tail, also I want to argue that as an artistic form the quality of photography is not compromised if it is not completely "truthful"
I also want to look into the reason that caused this sudden attack on photography's validity and the public newly found suspicion of it like a child who suddenly became aware that just because the book said its so doesn't mean it is so.
all of these elements will come together i believe to establish what i am trying to argue

video reaction

her Ethos was very clear, in the beginning she introduced her self, and imidiatly before presenting her topic talked about her credentials and even offered numbers that seemed very high and grabbed the viewers attention. Her Pathos was evident in the way she always referred to the students as your children your grandchildren your nieces so the audience felt connected she also kept saying the word "sick" she repeated it several times in order to establish a connection in the mind of the viewers that their children's illness stemmed from their food and showed an enlarged photo of a coffin in order to engage the feeling of fear. her logos were also very present she backed most of her statements with evidence, but i wonder how those statistics would have sounded if they had been stated in a purely academic matter without coffins or other pathos... I feel as though some of her statements were exaggerated, and she definitely failed to admit that there was any evidence that maybe contradicted her argument, although this is understandable since she was in front of a live audience.

annotated bibliography : topic

I am considering researching truth and photography.. since it ties in to a lot of points I made in my previous papers and because it is a highly controversial topic with many people who feel strongly about their opinions . I also believe it ties nicly into my art major and my past experiences at the same time
why is it that only recently have started to doubt photography? especially since there has always been manipulation in photos, we have we only recently doubted the validity of photography? and how has this effected the artistic approach to photography? how can we approach photography in this digitized age?

my essay

As always I am worried about my punctuation, and I know the essay still requires work in that aspect.
as for content I hope I wasn't too harsh in my reaction, I didn't agree with him in any way, but that reflects how I really felt about his article.
I also am confused about the title; were we supposed to simply name it (reaction to such and such) or were we supposed to come up with a title?
I also am a little bit concerned about my use of questions through- out the essay and if it works
I hope i was able to justly communicate my thoughts on the matter.

choice of article

link
I choose this article because it fulfills the assignment requirements, I found other articles that i would have probably preferred to write reaction paper about... but the assignment wasn't to find an interesting article but to find an article that involved bot your major and technology....and so in the end I picked my article because first of all it was the most(correct article) and secondly because of my reaction to it. I believe the reason that I kept slipping into unrelvent articales is that the tie between technology and art is not very strong in my mind. and i believe forcing my self to read the articles i didnt want to was a very beneficial exercise.

being an art major, censorship is a big issue...being from Syria censorship is an even bigger issue....I feel this article is very related to my major, and my personal experiences
http://www.sage-ereference.com/view/intlpoliticalscience/n58.xml

"Tired of political correctness" is what the author states. Any article with such a statement would make a good response essay add to the equation that it is about censorship in the arts

photography in Iraq a war torn country is also a matter of interest to me,espesially since its told through an individual experience of a photographer although the article may be too short to provide sufficient information for a reaction essay

Education

as I go through the articales on the database i am struck once and again by one thing...the beauty of education....
every time i try to find articles that will offend me ...(for once i want such articles for my reaction essay) I stumble across articles that strangely...don't !!
and almost everything on the net offends me these days, simply because of how full of myths, misunderstandings..and sometimes straight out lies...
but looking through articles written by the educated..is a whole different experience , even when i decided to really push it and searched for femininity and Islam (people think these two terms to be oxymoron's while the truth is i am as strong a feminist as they come only surpassed y my mother) and i was expecting to be attacked by articles about poor suppressed women i come up with this

beautiful.

database search results

photography in the age of falsification Kenneth Brower
I found this article to be very interesting more so because of its date of publication, it reflects a lot of ideas that i feel very strongly about and talked about in my first essay, but its publication in 1998 completely threw me because to me it felt so relevant, and yet when it describes the process of digitally editing a photograph you suddenly notice the difference in techniques between then and now.it brought to mind the question: what has changed in the last 12 years regarding photography falsification?and because it interested me so much i feel like i could possibly use it for my reaction essay.
photographic truth
—Aphrodite Désirée Navab
i found this article to be very informative in regards to the subject i am hoping to pursue in my reaction essay although it didn't excite me it did give ma a huge bulk of information about the topic and i believe i could use it for my reaction essay, so that i show how i felt and reacted to learning certain things in this essay about
photographic truth like "Technological Determinism" a concept I had never heard of before but found to very interesting.

Michelle Robb Tanner

I’m thinking about interviewing Michelle Robb Tanner A known photographer in Minnesota because she is not only a very talented photographer but also a very prolific one which I am sure gives her insight into the most important uses of technology in her field, I am interested in what technology is actually applicable in the field , because although a lot of technology is taught while studying photography I know that it not all of It is applied, so I will try in my interview to contrast between what is taught and what is used.

Technology in my field

Technology in my field
Although I know I want to major in art, I am not sure what exact field of art I want to study , but I am very interested in photography so in my interview I would like to find out how impotent programs like Photoshop are to a photographer. I also would like to learn more about the relationship between a photographer and his/her camera, and how much does the quality of the camera effect the overall photograph.

Complicating Access...

I felt the overall balance of the paper helped greatly in making the points it to make and that really got me thinking about the impotence of a well planned out essay, one that is thought out ahead of time (especially in the case of an interview) the way he countered information between the two case studies showed that he had a clear point in mind before he conducted the interview. And that did a lot to help the cohesiveness of the paper.
I also found that way he quoted the indiviuals he was studying to be extremely interesting, it had a familiarizing effect as though you knew these individuals on a first name bases, and although we are not supposed to use that type of quoting in our essay i still thought it important to come in contact with different styles of relating information.

interview essay

the articles i read gave me interesting insight to the different ways an essay can be written based on interviews, and the different ways the interview material can be used to state facts or statistics or just the general thoughts and opinions of the individual...and gave me a clear insight into the difference between our first essay and the interview essay and how the process of thought should be established.
what i found most useful was the importance of having a clear idea established of what the main ideas you want to have in your essay and the importance of having questions that support those ideas. also from something the professor said i made note of how important it is to clearly state your resources.

some more questions ..

What in your life (if anything) would change if you suddenly were no longer able to communicate with others in digital ways?
I would no longer be able to talk to my fathers side of the family including my aunts and cousins and grandparents, I would lose contact with basically all of my friends.
Describe a time when you communicated through the web, email, texting, chat, or Facebook when things went better than they might have if the communication had been face to face? What happened, and why do you think this communication worked better than it would have had you been talking face to face?
For some reason communicating through msn and similar programs is easier for me if it’s with someone I feel a little shy around, because I don’t have to worry about my voice going squeaky or having a dumb answer , I f I can’t think of something to say I just take a little time to think about it and pretend like it’s the internet connection that’s slow, so all successful chat communication’s for me have been with either an authority figure or just someone who I find intimidating, and most unsuccessful chat communications have been with close friends, because it never feels right because of how well we communicate face to face.
If you've used IM (Instant Messaging), texting, Twitter, or Facebook, when and how do you use it, and what sorts of effects has it had on personal relationships? If you've used chat rooms, think about your first experiences with them. What happened, and how did you feel about it?
Right now I use facebook mainly to keep updated on the news back home, believe it or not the news I get from facebook from my friends who usually were a witness or heard it from someone is more accurate then any news channel plus its faster then any breaking news banner.
I also us it to stay updated on my friends general lives, and through comments and similar function I feel involved to some degree in their lives.
Try to remember a specific computer technology that excited or angered you. Why did this technology have this specific impact on you?
I remember webcams changing the way I communicated with my overseas family, and they truly excited me now I could see my newly born cousin waving at me, and he can become familiarized with my face, before webcams whenever I visited the U.S the littlest members of the family would not even know who I was .
Another computer technology that changed things for me, was the adobe programs like Photoshop, illustrator, InDesign these programs changed my field of study and digitalized it giving artists exciting new opportunities and horizons.

thoughts on technology

My feelings about technology have always been integrated with my pride, perhaps my parents got over excited when I learned how to work the VCR or maybe I just really hate not knowing how to work something, but as long as I could remember I was always the IT expert in the house, any new technology that we got I would sit down with and through series of trial and error figure out how to get it to work. I really enjoyed the time I spent working out how the newest gadget in our house ticked , but of course what I enjoyed even more was the “ ESSMA COME FIX THIS FOR ME!!” ,
One of my earliest memories as a child using the computer was at my best friends house being introduced to a wonderful new world of computer games, now I think I realized the importance and danger of technology(although i am still obsessed with computer games), especially the internet for example; Facebook. I was one of the first of my friends to join , although I do remember thinking that it was a pretty useless site, of course now I honestly cannot imagine my life without it, it literally was one of the main reasons a revolution started in my country!
But before Facebook there was messenger, I remember how excited my mom was about this wonderful new program, now she could talk to her sister in America without worrying about paying a back breaking phone bill at the end of the month, and I remember how excited I was that now I could talk to my friend’s overseas, but what neither me or my mom saw coming was the amount of misunderstood situations msn can cause , I guess because there is no tone of voice of facial expressions, for example sarcasm is super dangerous to use on msn .
but overall i think my relationship with technology been highly linked to my relationship to the people i associate with the given technology.
